Social Networking and Healthcare Professionals by Bob Stovall
Where do consumers turn when they need a healthcare professional such as a doctor, dentist or chiropractor? According to an article at cnet.com, the answer to that question is Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. To quote the article, A fair number of consumers in the United States are relying on sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to help them with medical and health care issues. Polling 1,060 U.S. adults in February, PricewaterhouseCoopers found that a third use social media to find medical information, research and share symptoms, and offer their opinions about doctors, drugs, treatments, and heath plans. Overall, the same PriceWaterhouse poll suggests that 41% of those polled would use social media to choose a healthcare professional. With even higher numbers favoring social media among those 18-24 years of age, it appears that this trend will strengthen in the future. The message here is clear. Healthcare professionals need to begin using social media to position themselves in the healthcare marketplace. But an unplanned social media presence cab do more harm than good.
